A collection of rare broadcast recordings brings Heifetz's lively live performances back to life. Here comes a disc of Heifetz's "performances" on radio programs. Many of the recordings here are from his appearances on the popular "Bell Telephone Hour" program, and they showcase Heifetz's sharp and smooth playing in front of an audience. The orchestra sometimes seems to lag behind, but this is a realistic impression. There are no official recordings of Wieniawski's Ballade and Polonaise and Nováček's Everlasting Motion, so these recordings are very valuable. The inclusion of contemporary music of the time, such as Villa-Lobos, is also not to be missed. The rehearsal of Pied Pipers is typical of American radio. It begins with a discussion with the performers, and Heifetz rehearses and performs a boogie-woogie style passage. The comedy skit features a surprise appearance by Jack Benny, a very popular comedian.In addition to a joyful talk with Benny, who played violin in the band at the time, Heifetz and Benny perform a comical duet at the end, accompanied by the piano. The booklet includes eight photographs from this occasion, showing Heifetz in a striped suit performing the comedy with a serious expression on his face. The recording features a close-up of the violin, and is also valuable in that the performance can be heard during the period (August 1942-November 1944) when the American Musicians Union refrained from producing records for commercial use.
