The shock that people in the 19th century experienced is recreated! Carmen" is arguably the most frequently performed French opera in the world. The premiere of "Carmen," which took place shortly before the composer Bizet's death, was not well received due to the graphic reality of the setting and the unsalvageable ending, reminding us of the difficulty of a comprehensive art form where not only the music but also the plot development and stage direction can lead to the success or failure of a performance. In recent years, production notes have been discovered at the Museum of History in Paris, detailing not only the costumes and props used in the premiere of "Carmen," but also the chorus movements and the color and number of lights, providing a detailed picture of the stage performance that made a vivid impression on the audience at the time. Based on the notes, this video is a production of the Rouen Normandie Opera that faithfully recreates the "stage at the time of the premiere" as much as possible, while also referring to other historical documents from the same period.The score is based on the recitative version by Guiraud, a friend of the composer, and is the latest revision supervised by the Palazetto Bru Zane (Center for French Music of the Romantic Period). Ben Glasberg will conduct. Conductor Ben Glasberg, born in 1994, is a young conductor who has served as music director of the Rouen Normandy Opera since 2021 and will also serve as music director of the Vienna Volksoper in 2024. As usual with Bru Zane, the booklet is full of illustrations and historical references (in French, English, German, and Italian), and the release conveys the plot in every detail of the images.
