Johannes Bernardus van Brey was a violinist, conductor, and composer who was hailed as one of the most talented musicians in the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century. 1848 saw the Dutch premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. He went on to give the Dutch premieres of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique and Wagner's Faust Overture. This album contains an elegant violin concerto, a fantasy reminiscent of Schumann's works, and two overtures, all in the traditional style of the early Romantic period, as Bley was also an active violinist.
