Giovanni Sollima (cello) Recorded: October 9-11, 2023 at Palazzo Santan Chiara, Tropea (Italy) Total recording time: 55 min. Cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima's latest album is a dynamic, energetic, and original work that has attracted a great deal of attention. The album is an ambitious and challenging work, with selections that transcend time, region, and genre, and all the pieces are unaccompanied. The album's title, "Ba Rock Cello," refers to a project in which Solima "reinterprets" famous rock songs and combines them with works by Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries for unaccompanied cello. The album also includes a variety of roots music from different countries and his own compositions. The cello bass is used like a drone to create an exotic sound effect in the folklore pieces, the baroque pieces boldly emphasize rhythm while others are deeply meditative, and the rock and pop pieces are not mere covers but highly original arrangements and performances that bring Sollima's color to the forefront and create a sense of unity as an album. The rock and pop songs are not mere covers, but highly original arrangements and performances that bring Sollima's color to the forefront and create a sense of unity as an album. In some pieces, he roars, sings, and shouts, a finish that also makes one acutely aware of the music's roots in song. Sollima will visit Japan in March 2025 for a series of concerts, from unaccompanied recitals to performances with orchestra and the "100 Cellos" project, which is very much like him. (Naxos Japan)
