David Matthews is a contemporary British composer regarded as "the heir to Tippett and Britten. He has composed 17 string quartets. The eighth quartet on this album was composed to commemorate the 40th birthday of his friend, Czech composer Pavel Novák, but the final movement is dedicated to the memory of another friend, Bertolt Goldschmidt, who died in 1996, and the last two notes of the first violin The last two notes of the first violin represent his initials. No. 16 was premiered at the Beverly Chamber Music Festival in 2022.This one is also dedicated to his friend Hugh Wood, who passed away in August 2021, and incorporates motifs from Wood's works. No. 17 is for the Kreutzer Quartet, which has worked together for nearly 30 years. The first movement has a showcase with each of the four players playing a solo, the second movement is played entirely in pizzicato, the meditative third movement begins with a fantastic atmosphere as if wandering in a dream, followed by an elaborate fugue, and the final movement closes with a frenzied final movement. The last movement is accompanied by the Mean Clavier, Vol. 1, No. 24, which is one of Bach's finest works. Matthews, who says, "This is the best of Bach's works," has arranged this piece for string quartet. (Naxos Japan)
