Description:
Paganini began writing quartets for strings and guitar around 1813 and dedicated them to his friends and acquaintances. The first six were published by Ricordi as Op. 4 and 5, but the next ten remained unpublished; No. 7 was published in 1955, and later, little by little, after his collection was returned to Italy in 1972. No. 6 on this album is estimated to have been composed between late 1816 and early the following year. Although No. 11 is written in B major, which was unusual for the time, it is an elegant work filled with well-balanced sounds throughout. No. 13 is a work from the composer's mature period, with a particularly impressive first movement that clearly contrasts the rhythmic first theme and lyrical second theme. Beautiful melodies reminiscent of operatic arias also appear here and there. The Paganini Ensemble Wien, named after the composer, is a Vienna-based ensemble founded by Mario Hossen, a well-known Paganini scholar. Naxos Japan
