This is the fifteenth installment of #bruckner2024, an initiative of the CAPRICCIO label and the International Bruckner Society to record all Bruckner symphony manuscripts (versions) during the year 2024, the bicentennial of Bruckner's birth. This is an interesting album about Bruckner's debut symphony "No. 1". The 1865 scherzo included at the end of the album is believed to have been composed as the scherzo movement of No. 1, but was later replaced, so it has never been performed or recorded. Although the main part is different from the scherzo in the first and second drafts, the material of the trio is common, and it is interesting to learn about Bruckner's musical development. Here we use a score published in 1995. The recording by this duo, who no longer seem to be Bruckner specialists, is a valuable resource. The Symphony No. 1 was begun in 1865, completed in 1866 (first draft), premiered in Linz in 1868, and revised several times after 1877 until the second draft was completed in 1991.There are no major differences between the two manuscripts in terms of basic materials and structure, but the second manuscript, which was released based on the experience up to the 8th, is more proficient in orchestration, and the articulations and phrases are arranged in a way that is easier to understand. Whether this is seen as a dilution of Bruckner's original conception or an enhancement of perfection is a matter of debate, but the status of the second draft as a concert version authorized and published by the composer is unassailable, and both are to be compared and enjoyed.
