David Johnson, a composer from Edinburgh, Scotland, is known as a scholar of 18th-century Scottish music and the author of numerous works, including a string quartet and a suite for unaccompanied cello. The "Twelve Preludes and Fugues" is one of his few piano pieces, written for pianist and composer Ronald Stevenson. The small collection of preludes and fugues, each about five minutes long, includes pieces reminiscent of Prokofiev, quotations from J.S. Bach, and melodies from well-known folk songs such as "Johnny Cope" and "The Animals Went Marching Two by Two" (Noah's Ark Song). The album also includes songs that use well-known folk melodies such as "Johnny Cope" and "The Animals Went Marching Two by Two. Christopher Guild, who performs on this disc, is particularly adept at Scottish piano music, and has been highly acclaimed for his recordings of Stevenson and Wordsworth's works. (Naxos Japan)
