Valentin Uryupin、Tchaikovsky (1840-1893):

Description:

The Frankfurt Opera presents "Chalodeika," a hidden masterpiece from Tchaikovsky's mature period -- a true love-hate drama sung by Asmik Grigoryan! Nastassja (nicknamed Kuma), a beautiful and intelligent widow who runs an inn in the suburbs of Nizhny Novgorod, is the object of admiration of all the men in the neighborhood (the title of the opera, "Charodeika," means "a woman who charms"). Today, many men gather at her inn to drink, sing songs, and have a good time. Prince Nikita, the lord of Nizhny Novgorod, falls in love with Kuma at first sight and tries to win her by force, but she vehemently rejects him. When Nikita's subordinate, Mamuilov, falsely informs Nikita's wife, Princess Yevpraxia, that Kuma has seduced Nikita, the princess, who suspects her husband of infidelity, is seized with intense jealousy. When his mother's duchess tells him about Kuma and his father, Yuri, her impulsive son, takes a dagger and rides into Kuma's inn to seek revenge against his family's enemies. ...... The third and last of the 11 operas (10 if not revised) that Tchaikovsky completed during his lifetime, "Chalodeika" was written by the playwright Ippolito Spazinsky, who wrote the play of the same name. Tchaikovsky commissioned the playwright Ippolito Spazinsky, author of the play of the same name, to write the libretto for "Chalodeika," the third to last of his eleven operas, which was composed in 1885 and premiered in early winter 1887 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, under Tchaikovsky's own direction. Composed in the composer's mature period, prior to his Fifth Symphony (1888), the ballet Sleeping Beauty (1890), and the opera The Queen of Spades (1890), the work was reportedly criticized at its premiere due to its weak dramaturgy (redundancy). The composer was not discouraged, saying, "...I am not in despair. This is an opera you have to get used to. When the ears of the audience become accustomed to this opera, it will eventually become part of the repertoire..." (Letter to Julia Spazinskaya dated November 9, 1887).In December 2022, the Frankfurt Opera will present a new production of the play, directed by Vasily Barkhatov. The production, directed by Vasily Barukhatov, takes the stage from the 15th century Grand Duchy of Moscow to contemporary Russia in an attempt to portray a love-hate relationship between a man and a woman against the backdrop of the conflict between the traditional values of the old generation and the liberal values of the new generation over a single attractive woman.
