Composed entirely of graduates from the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at the Tokyo University of the Arts, this group’s performances explore new horizons while faithfully upholding the teachings of their predecessors—offering a unique perspective. Of particular note is the inclusion of contemporary works alongside the traditional Japanese repertoire—a first for OCORA, a label typically focused on so-called “folk music.” This CD, which also includes Satoru Ichiyanagi’s “Metamorphosis of Flowers”—a piece the “Hogaku Quartet” learned directly from the composer himself—is a noteworthy release that reaffirms tradition while hinting at a new tradition that bridges the past to the future. ———Yasuaki Itakura (Producer) Formed in the spring of 2011 by graduates of the Traditional Japanese Music Department at the Tokyo University of the Arts, the Traditional Japanese Music Quartet now presents a new recording on OCORA, operated by Radio France.
