Bernard Haitink, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
Description:
[Here comes the live performance of Bruckner's Seventh, to which Haitink showed particular affection in his later life, at the age of 52, when he wielded an orchestra that retained the sound of the Kubelík era] The 2023/24 season, which marks 65 years since Bernard Haitink made his subscription concert debut with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in 1958 To commemorate the occasion, Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 from 1981 is now available on CD for the first time. At this time, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was in its third season without a principal conductor after the retirement of Raphael Kubelík in 1979 after 18 years at the helm, and the sudden death of Kirill Kondrászin in the spring of 1981, when the orchestra finally decided to replace him (the rival Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in the same city had been without a principal conductor since 1979 Celibidacke took over in 1979). One of the guest conductors who supported the orchestra in such a situation was Haitink. Haitink recorded the complete Bruckner symphonies from 1963 to 1972 (No. 7 in 1966). In the 1978 re-recording of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony (both recordings were made by the Concertgebouw Orchestra), such manipulations were less noticeable, and Haitink showed his skill in weaving the drama within the natural flow of the work. The 1981 performance recorded here is also a good example of this. The 1981 performance here is in the same style as the 1978 recording, and one can immerse oneself in the music at ease, while at the same time listening closely to the details, one can sense the orchestra's sensitivity to the conductor's interpretation. Although the recording lacks a little in detail resolution compared to more recent recordings, it is a rare opportunity to hear Haitink's interpretation of Bruckner with an orchestra that retains the sound of the Kubelík era. In his mature years, Bruckner's Seventh Symphony was a special repertoire for Haitink, who performed it in Japan in 1997 (Vienna Philharmonic), 2009 (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), and 2015 (London Symphony Orchestra), and in 2019 he will make his last guest appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic and conduct it in his retirement with the Vienna Philharmonic. He also conducted a retirement concert with theThe addition of a performance from his prime years will be a great joy for fans of his art. Naxos Japan
