Description:
All pieces on CD for the first time! Gary Bertini has a large number of fans in Japan thanks to his many excellent performances with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Cologne and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The performances he left with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra are now available for the first time on CD from the master tapes of the Southwest German Broadcasting Corporation. This box set is a valuable source of information and includes live performances of Bertini's repertoire, from his first meeting with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra to his visit to Japan in 1996. Bertini was born in 1927 in what is now Moldova (then Romanian territory). His mother was a biologist and doctor, and his father was a poet and translator. The family moved to Palestine while he was still a child. Bertini studied violin and went on to the Conservatory of Verdi in Milan, but later studied composition, conducting, and musicology at the Ecole Normale in Paris, the Paris Conservatory, and the Sorbonne. He then worked in Israel. In 1955, he founded the choir Rinat (now the Israel National Chorus), and in 1965 he founded the Israel Chamber Ensemble (now the Israel Chamber Orchestra), which has made a significant contribution to the Israeli musical world by performing everything from Josquin des Prez to new works of the same era. He made his European debut in England at the invitation of Menuhin in 1966, when he was nearly 40 years old. His debut in Germany was even later, in 1971. Since then, he has steadily expanded his activities and gained recognition, serving as chief conductor of the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra and general music director of the Frankfurt Opera House.
