Description:
This is a collection of religious works by Francesco Cavalli, a composer of the Italian Baroque period. Cavalli, who is now famous as an excellent opera composer, also wrote many religious works in the field of Venetian music, combining the traditional double chorus style of the Venetian school with his own fluent and beautiful melodies, and these works are as good as those of Monteverdi. While the vocal parts are superb, the instrumental parts also employ elaborate techniques, and the polyphony of voices and instruments is a must-hear. Following the Hymns and Psalms (CDS-7902), this album contains six pieces from a collection of 28 works published in 1656 and dedicated to Gian Carlo de' Medici (1611-1663). Among them is the world premiere recording of Confitebor "I confess to thee, O Lord, with all my heart," a magnificent work with four-part coro favolito (here performed by one person per part) and two groups of coro di ripieno (three or four chorus members per part) accompanied by instrumental music.
