Description:
A collection of religious choral works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who was music director of five major churches in Hamburg from 1768 until his death in 1788. This album contains four works, primarily Magnificat and Christmas Cantata. The Magnificat was composed in Berlin in 1749 and revised in Hamburg in 1779, when three trumpets, two horns, and timpani were added to give it a festive glow. Track 10 contains the fourth chorus, "Et misericordia," in the original Berlin version for comparison. The brilliant Christmas cantata was composed in 1775. He loved this work so much that he performed it many times. C.P.E. Bach wrote in his autobiography that he had only 12 hours to compose this work. It is hard to believe that C.P.E. Bach had only 12 hours to compose this work, but it is a work of such high perfection. Naxos Japan
