Description:
[A 1957 live recording featuring Szigeti’s signature repertoire is released on CD for the first time. Includes a mini-talk by Szigeti himself!] József Szigeti (1892–1973) earned deep respect not only from music lovers but also from subsequent generations of violinists through his performances and interpretations, which were underpinned by exceptional intellect and erudition. Although Szigeti left behind numerous landmark recordings of Classical and Romantic works, he was concerned that concert programs tended to rely too heavily on standard masterpieces, and he was concerned that audiences would come to listen only to pieces they already knew. Consequently, in the mid-1950s, he organized a series of concerts titled “11 Masterpieces of the 20th Century,” spanning three days, which he performed in various locations. This recording features the program from the third day of that series. All of the pieces were favorites of Szigeti’s, and while he had made studio recordings of them, here—together with his collaborator Bussotti—he delivers a performance that combines rock-solid interpretation with the spontaneity of a live performance. The recording of this concert later came into the possession of Frederick Maroth (1929–2013), who, like Szigeti, was born in Budapest. In the mid-1960s, Maroth hosted a radio program titled “The Art of the Performer,” which, at its peak, was broadcast on over 150 stations in the United States alone, as well as in Canada and Europe. Intending to feature this recording on his program, Maroth asked Szigeti—with whom he was acquainted—to provide commentary. Szigeti gladly agreed and sent Maroth the commentary he had recorded at a radio station studio in Lausanne, which was then broadcast in the form heard here. Biddulph has reissued the tapes from this radio program on CD. Szigeti’s commentary is in English, and while the length varies by piece—ranging from just over one minute (Honegger) to just over four minutes (Ravel)—it reveals memories of the composers and insights into their musical interpretations, making this a truly valuable reissue. *Additional Information ・The composers featured by Szigeti in his “11 Masterpieces of the 20th Century” series include, in addition to the four included here, Bartók, Bloch, Busoni, Debussy, Hindemith, Webern, and Vaughan Williams.
