Description:
The light and darkness of the world in which the French people lived in the olden days. The album is a collection of traditional folk music from the Vendée department in the Poitou region of western France, arranged in the manner of the Baroque period and performed on ancient musical instruments. The Vendée department is located just south of the Brittany peninsula and has a rich tradition of folk dances. Miguel Henri, an old string repellent player, collaborated with his old friend, folk singer Laurent Tixier, to collect various kinds of music from this Vendée department. The arrangements are rich in material and nuances of the old instruments, and sometimes sounding like folk music, sometimes like a court orchestra, they create a musical world reminiscent of the pleasures of the aristocrats who loved folk culture and enjoyed it at court in the olden days.All of the musicians who participate in the performance, including Jérôme Van Waalbeke on violin and Arnaud de Pasqual on clavecin, who are both active members of the Pygmalion, are as experienced and talented as Miguel Henri. The sense of how to move back and forth between the two worlds with exquisite ease in each piece is breathtaking. The source of each piece is clearly indicated in the commentary (in French and English).
