A Collection of Patriotic Music Celebrating the French Revolution and the Republican Army] This album features a collection ranging from patriotic songs such as Meyure’s “Song of Departure,” Berlioz’s arrangement of “La Marseillaise,” and Blanquet’s “March of the Sambre-et-Meuse Regiment,” to music celebrating the Republican Army found in French opera. The performance is by the Garde Républicaine (Republican Guard) Military Band, well-known in Japan as a wind ensemble. Although the group has long performed as an orchestra incorporating string sections, it is credited here as a symphony orchestra (Orchestre symphonique). The French Army Choir also participates in the choral parts. At the podium is Hervé Niquet, a specialist in Renaissance and Baroque music who has recently earned high acclaim for his interpretations of modern French music, particularly vocal works such as operas. He draws a tight, passionate sound from the Garde Républicaine, with whom he is collaborating for the first time. The performance by this ensemble—centered on an authentic group with ties to the current French Armed Forces—exudes overwhelming power.
