[Biddulph Reissues Heifetz’s Only Recording of Bach’s Unaccompanied Suites from an Early Release] Biddulph, which is dedicated to reissuing recordings by students of Leopold Auer—a teacher who nurtured many of the 20th century’s greatest violinists—presents Jascha Heifetz’s (1901–1987) only complete recording of Bach’s Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas. This is a reissue from his early LP recordings. Heifetz was born in Vilna (now Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania) during the Tsarist era and was accepted as a student of Auer at the age of nine. A precocious genius who performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under Arthur Nikisch at age 12 and made his Carnegie Hall debut at 16, he maintained his exceptional technique and musicality throughout his career, building an overwhelming reputation. This 1952 RCA recording is the only complete recording by Heifetz of Bach’s Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas. Since this performance predates the widespread adoption of interpretations incorporating elements of Baroque dance, it may sound slightly unfamiliar to ears accustomed to period instrument performances; however, the performance is magnificent in its ability to strip away all artifice and bring out the multi-layered sound structure Bach intended from a single violin; another appealing aspect is that, despite the somewhat brisk tempo, the unique beauty of the violin is never compromised throughout. A CD reissue of this recording from the original RCA master tape is already available. Regarding the reason for this latest reissue, the Biddulph label states: “While a reissue from the master tape has advantages in terms of noise reduction, we believe the sound of the original pressings is the one recognized by the performer and producer. That is the significance of seeking out original pressings in good condition and reissuing them.” Each disc features a luxurious bonus track: one of Bach’s violin concertos performed as a solo by Heifetz. The booklet features four pages of color photographs of Heifetz’s beloved Guarneri del Gesù (1742), and the covers of the original four-LP set are also reproduced in color. Naxos Japan
