Description:

Following a long hiatus, Levin & AAM resumed their recording of Mozart’s Complete Piano Concertos in the spring of 2023 under a new label. Volume 3 focuses on concertos for multiple instruments, featuring two concertos for two pianos, as well as concerto movements completed by Levin (K. 242 is a piece originally written for three pianos that Mozart arranged for two). In the concertos for two pianos, husband-and-wife duo Robert Levin and Ya-Fei Chuang deliver a dynamic performance marked by perfect musical chemistry. Chuan is highly regarded by Brendel; in her duo with Levin, they perform works ranging from the Classical period to the present using both period and modern instruments, and their recordings include works by Grieg, Dutilleux, and arrangements of Wagner’s works by Reger. The concerto movement for piano, violin, and orchestra is said to have been conceived as the first movement of a concerto during Mozart’s stay in Mannheim in 1778. Alfred Einstein reportedly stated, “The fact that this remained unfinished is the greatest loss to Mozart’s art.” A total of 120 measures survive; while the fanfare-like opening tutti is fully orchestrated, after the introduction of the solo instruments (listed in the autograph score as “harpsichord and violin”— “harpsichord” was a general term for all keyboard instruments at the time) appear, only the first violin and bass parts are written out. Levin has crafted a bright and dynamic movement in keeping with Mozart’s style. The recording is also captivating. The collaboration between Neil Hutchinson (four-time Grammy Award winner), heir to the Decca Sound, and Adrian Peacock—a singer and music director of Pro Canzione Antica—brilliantly captures the crystal-clear texture and delicacy of the 4/3/2/2/1 string and wind ensemble, dynamism. The 64-page booklet (in English only) includes program notes, performer profiles, details on the instruments used, interviews with AAM ensemble members, and recollections from the recording producer. As with all titles in the series, the cover features a painting by Paul Klee, whom AAM founder Hogwood admired. Naxos Japan
