Description:

The viola da gamba gradually disappeared from the music scene toward the end of the 17th century, but there were regions in Europe where this instrument remained a favorite until the latter half of the 18th century. This album features a number of gumba pieces that were still actively composed in those regions during the Classical period and were composed as duets with the cello, a bowed string instrument of the same low-middle register, as well as unaccompanied works by Abel, whose 300th birthday will be in 2023. The gamba used is an original instrument made by Barack Norman, a cello maker active in London in the early 18th century, where Abel was active, and Victor Tepelman plays it with a bow made by the Dadd family (also an original from around 1800), which enjoyed great fame in the late 18th century. He skillfully plays the extended, strange notes characteristic of the gamba, even in quick phrases, and brings out the rich flavor of the cantabile. The cello played by Gerhard Darmstadt, who studied under Arnoncourt and Bylsma, stands as an equal duo partner with the gamba when it comes to bass accompaniment, and the subtle differences in sound provide plenty of contrasts for the audience to enjoy. The works of Hammer, a gamba player of Boccherini's generation known for his relationship with Haydn and the Marquis of Esterházy, are filled with the spirit of song; the style of Abel, known for his collaboration with Johann Christian, the youngest son of Bach, is both flowing and profound; and the fresh sound of the works of Riddle (Riedel), who was active across the German and British borders, is well-known. The fresh sound of Riedel's works is a fascinating world of sound that is hard to ignore. Naxos Japan
