The first Shostakovich release by Gernet and Franck, "Songs of the Dead" with participation by Grigorian] Matthias Gernet, a talented German baritone, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck, begin releasing Shostakovich's works for bass and orchestra. The first release, Symphony No. 14, features one of the most sought-after sopranos in the world today, Asmik Grigorian, who won the Record Academy Award for Best Video Disc in 2022 for Janacek's "Jenufa," and whose success with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra's "Salome" conducted by Nott is fresh in our minds. Asmik Grigorian is participating in this concert. The two performers, Guerne, whose deep voice resonates beautifully in the lower register, and Grigorian, who has a rich and lustrous voice, bring depth to this work about death, and together with Franck's delicate control of the orchestra, give an excellent performance with rich shades.
