Description:
Ronald Stevenson was born in England. He is best known for his long and difficult piano works such as "Passacaglia on DSCH," but he has also written many piano arrangements of Scottish, Chinese, and African folk songs. He also showed interest in the accordion and wrote various dances and other pieces for this instrument. The "Dance Poem on Oscar Wilde's 'The Whore's House'" featured on the album is a duet for accordion and percussion, in which a series of waltzes and cadrilles in the style of Johann Strauss are played. The Celtic Cycle is a short suite for unaccompanied accordion. This is Stevinson's first accordion work, and it makes the most of his versatile tone. Two works arranged by Neil Sutcliffe himself, who plays accordion on the album, "South Wist Island," a suite for piano, and "Five Songs," with piano accompaniment, are a tribute to Stevenson's fusion of Scottish folk music and classical music.
