Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Cappella Mediterranea, Namur Chamber Choir

Description:

The Argentinean conductor Leonardo Garcia Alarcon has been creating a sensation with his masterful performances of baroque works from countries around the Mediterranean Sea that combine unparalleled passion and exquisite interpretation. In recent years, he has also been making notable achievements in interpreting orchestral works from the Classical period onward, but this time he will be performing a surprisingly Renaissance work. Together with the Namur Chamber Choir, a talented group based in Namur, one of the major cities in French-speaking Belgium, he will present a selection of masses by the master Arcadelt, who is said to have come from the same city. Arcadelt, a contemporary of the English Tallis and Spanish Cabezon and Ortiz, joined the Pope's Sistine Chapel Julia Choir at a young age, and after a long career there, served the French kings Henri II and Charles IX. He is said to have been friends with Michelangelo, the artist of "The Last Judgment". The program includes a collection of works related to the Virgin Mary, the centerpiece of which is "Missa Noët Noët," composed around the melody of Christmas music by Jean Mouton, a French-speaking composer who was also active in the Papal court. The Alarcon is a neat four-part polyphony with an ensemble of woodwind cornet and trombone, a recorder, dulcian (the predecessor of the bassoon), and organ, recreating a magnificent sound reminiscent of the Arcadelt's days under powerful rulers such as the Pope and the French royal family. The pure harmony of the ancient instruments is reproduced. The beauty of the genuine harmony unique to ancient instruments and the supple sound production that never relies on power make it possible to fully enjoy the charms of polyphonic music. This is a masterful performance that attracts the audience with the exquisite interpretation of Alarcon, who is also known for his interpretation of Bach. Naxos Japan
