Richard Fleury is a Swiss composer. He studied conducting with Felix Weingartner at the local conservatory and composition with Joseph Marx in Vienna. Eventually, he conducted the orchestra of the city of Zolotrun for 30 years and also worked as a composer, leaving behind numerous works ranging from symphonic, instrumental, and vocal works to religious works. Fleury wrote more than 180 songs with piano accompaniment, and this album contains four sets of songs written between 1920 and 1946. In the tradition of German lieder by Schumann, Brahms, and others, all of his works have a romantic atmosphere and beautiful melodies. Many of his works have dates of completion, like diaries. Twenty Women's Songs" is a selection of songs he wrote in three weeks based on his own experiences in love. Eight Love Songs" is a collection of songs that were also born from Fleury's own experience of heartbreak. Ten Evening Songs" is based on texts by five poets, all of which Fleury later arranged into songs for chamber orchestra. Seven Little Songs" is a collection of songs based on poems by Josef Reinhardt in the Zoloturn dialect.Published in 1908, the poem became so popular that many composers, including Hindemith, used it in their songs.
