cpo's new series "Music of the Ancient Hanseatic League" has begun. The first collection is Stralsund. Stralsund joined the Hanseatic League in the 13th century and prospered from the 14th to the 15th century. Its historical district, together with the historical district of Wismar, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This album contains instrumental and religious vocal works by composers active in the region in the 17th century. Both vocal and instrumental music are treated in a virtuoso manner, indicating the high standard of performance at that time. In addition to the violins, Sakbat and Zink add colorful sounds appropriate to the early Baroque period. The performance by Manfredo Cordes and the Hanseatic Ensemble of Europe is a masterpiece of the early Baroque period. Naxos Japan
