Description:

The most famous French modern master's opera, recorded in its entirety in his native Belgium! César Franck was born in Belgium during the Dutch colonial period, and later moved to France, where he left a significant mark on the development of the country's unique modern music. The complete recording of his great opera "Fulda," completed in 1885 at about the same time as his masterpieces such as the Violin Sonata and Symphony, has been completed by the leading orchestra and chorus of French-speaking Belgium. The complete work was previously released by NAXOS in 2021 under the auspices of the Southwest German Broadcasting Corporation (8.660480), and now, with the full cooperation of the Palazetto Bru Zane, a French-speaking organization dedicated to the revival of 19th century music in Belgium, the composer's homeland, this recording has been completed by the leading French-speaking Belgian orchestra and chorus. The significance of this latest recording is immeasurable, as it is accompanied by a 160-page booklet (French and English) full of articles that can only be found on the Bru Zane label. This epic work in four acts depicting a love-hate relationship between medieval Norwegian clans was not performed during the composer's lifetime, and even after its premiere in Monte Carlo in 1894, four years after his death, the work was little neglected. The present recording refers to the first published score published by Sudan in Paris in 1895, shortly after the premiere, which was not included in the NAXOS recording conducted by Fabrice Boron (based on the Sudan edition, with references to Sikorski in Hamburg), which claimed no cuts, and even the choice of lyrics has been interpreted differently in some parts. The selection of lyrics also has some different interpretations. Under the baton of the brilliant Hungarian talent Madarasz, the Belgian orchestra and chorus gave shape to the fullness of the libretto with a sense of precision and unity, and Jennifer Holloway, who plays the vengeful leading role of Fulda, and other notable singers such as Jans, Van Van Looy, and Montvydas, all of whom showed a strong dramatic presence in their own right, wove the story together in a performance that was a real treat to listen to. The interpretation of the performance is truly outstanding, weaving the story together. It is an immeasurable pleasure to be able to appreciate once again the richness of the musical world of Franck's late period, which includes many masterpieces for orchestral chorus. The name of this work was previously written as "Yulda" in French, but since it is called "Fulda" in this disc, the name has been changed to "Fulda" as well. The names of the characters have also been changed in the same way. Naxos Japan
