Description:
Robert Levin and the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) present Mozart: The Complete Concertos for Keyboard Instruments, the second reopening of the complete Mozart: The Complete Concertos for Keyboard Instruments, featuring the solo piano concerto No. 5 performed on the organ based on historical research. This remarkable collection includes the first recording of Levin's "restoration" of the concerto movement. The first piece of note is a "restoration" of a piece from "Nannerl's Music Book," which Mozart's father Leopold had started for the study of Mozart's sister Nannerl. The piece is written in the style of the first movement of a concerto, but without the orchestral part. The author had not been identified, although it was thought that it was not written by Leopold because of the immaturity of the writing style. In 2009, however, it was determined to be Mozart's work, and Robert Levin was in charge of restoring it as a concerto with orchestral parts. It is a sunny and lively piece of just over five minutes. K.175, also known as the Piano Concerto No. 5, has undergone so many revisions that the young Mozart loved to play it on his travels that the first version can never be fully restored. Based on the remaining documents, Robert Levin estimated that Mozart premiered the piece on the organ of the church attached to the University of Salzburg, since the first draft of the piece was completely devoid of dynamics, which should be a natural feature of piano music, and was unnatural in light of the register of the piano and harpsichord of the time. In search of an environment close to that, he performed and recorded it on an organ built in 1760, during Mozart's lifetime. Levin's playing is agile and clear, and combined with the sound of the AAM, it sometimes reminds one of Handel's Organ Concerto. The album also includes Mozart's arrangement of Johann Christian Bach's three sonatas as a concerto for keyboard, K.107, where the solo instrument is the harpsichord, and the final church sonata, K.336, completed during his Salzburg years, where the solo instrument is the organ. The 64-page booklet (English only) includes a full description of the pieces and profiles of the performers, as well as details of the instruments used, interviews with AAM orchestra members, recollections of the recording engineer, and field reports.
