Description:
José F. Vázquez was one of the leading composers of Mexican classical music in the first half of the 20th century. An accomplished pianist, conductor, and educator, he left behind many works, many of whose scores have been lost since his death, leaving few opportunities for performance. However, after 40 years of research by his son, writer José Jesús Vázquez Torres, it was possible to recover many of the lost scores, and Vázquez's music is finally being reappraised. This "Impressions for Piano," a collection of 15 pieces in five volumes composed between about 1922 and 1927, is filled with an introspective atmosphere that is strongly influenced by French Impressionism, especially Debussy. It is characterized by simple textures and beautiful sound. The performance is by Mexico City-born pianist Vladimir Kriel. He is the founder and director of the Querétaro-based Fortepiano Instituto de Perfeccionamiento Artistico y Musical, which is dedicated to discovering and promoting the works of unjustly forgotten Mexican composers.
