Description:
Composer Burk was born in 1937 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He now lives in Finland and is best known as a tango composer, but his more than 20 symphonies are an important part of his oeuvre. 15, in three movements, is inspired by the history of the Ousimaa region of Finland, a country between the powerful nations of Finnish soldier and president Mannerheim, Estonian revolutionary and first president Pats, Sweden and Russia, and the Soviet Union. The three movements of No. 15 are inspired by the history of the Uusimaa region of Finland, which is located between two powerful countries, Sweden and Russia. The music is in the style of Nielsen, with heavy use of percussion instruments such as bass drum and timpani, and a delicate waltz reminiscent of Sibelius. No. 16 is inspired by the history of the Dnipro (Dnepr) River, a large river that flows from Russia through Belarus and Ukraine to the Black Sea. The second movement, entitled "The Story of Chornobyl," depicts the catastrophe and horror of the 1986 nuclear accident, and the final movement, entitled "Storm and Enlightenment," is far from a scheduled resolution, reminding us once again of the troubled history of this region.
