Description:
New recordings and images of this masterpiece opera from the end of the 17th century, following the passing of Lully, at the forefront of the scene! The long-awaited new recording of the masterpiece opera "David and Jonatas" by Charpentier, one of the most important composers of the French 17th century, is now available from the home of the work, Versailles! When Charpentier visited Rome to study painting as a young man, he was struck by the works of the great master Carissimi and turned to music. After returning to France, his activities were greatly restricted by the reign of Lully, the royal music director under the Sun King Louis XIV, but he made great strides in receiving commissions from various institutions in Paris. David and Jonatas," a lyric tragedy (a full-scale tragic opera with a French libretto) based on an Old Testament story, was performed in 1688, shortly after Lully's sudden death, and is a masterpiece of the composer's first-rate skills, but the complete work has rarely been recorded. The new recording by the elite of the French classical music world is a very welcome development. The instrumentalists of the talented Marguerite Louise group include the bass de viol (viola da gamba) player Robin Faro of the Nevermind group and the recorder player Sebastien Marc, who has had a long and distinguished career. It is a pleasure to be able to enjoy this masterpiece in a magnificent performance that can only be found in France, even in the minor roles, led by Reynout van Mechelen, Caroline Arnaud, and David Vichak, who have been expanding their activities in recent years. Marshall Pinkoski's direction, which respects the candlelight of the 17th century, vividly enlivens the performance in the Royal Chapel of Versailles and further accentuates the charm of the performance.
