Description:
The 100th anniversary of the Moscow Jewish Music Society. The Society for Jewish Folk Music was founded in 1908 by the composer Yoel Engel and others. Even before that, a number of musicians and researchers, including Rimsky-Korsakov of the Russian Five, had been collecting Jewish folk music and publishing the results of their research based in St. Petersburg, but the movement gradually spread, and in 1923 the Jewish Music Society was established in Moscow. However, the Soviet regime suppressed and imprisoned those who opposed "socialist realism," and this movement was short-lived, ending with a concert in April 1929, in the face of anti-Semitism. The pianist Yascha Nemtsov's father, who plays a central role in this album, was one of the concentration camp survivors, and he enlisted the help of many others to restore the Jewish works buried in history, resulting in the recording of five albums between 1999 and 2004, including a world premiere. The first five albums were recorded between 1999 and 2004, including the world's first recordings.Performers include Wolfgang Meier, Tabea Zimmermann, Ingolf Truban, David Geringas, and Helene Schneiderman, along with Nemtsov.
