Description:
[The Height of Harpsichord Artistry at the Palace of Versailles, Between the Baroque and Classical Periods!] Although not quite as prominent as his predecessor, the Sun King Louis XIV, Louis XV reigned as King of France for nearly 60 years. During his reign (1715–1774), while the French style that had taken root in the 17th century continued to captivate the public, foreign musical cultures flowed into France to an extent unimaginable under the Sun King, and the particularly dazzling sounds of the Rococo era enchanted the royal court and the people of Paris. Although the king himself showed little interest in music, he was surrounded by many women who were music lovers—including Queen Leszinska, Madame de Pompadour, and the princesses—who cultivated their artistic sensibilities through close interactions with leading composers. As a result, a steady stream of solo pieces for the harpsichord, intended for private performance, was introduced to the world. Straddling traditional French styles and those of other countries such as Italy and Germany, the masterpieces of these harpsichord composers—who led the trends of their time—offer a glimpse into a surprisingly rich and unique musical world that existed before Viennese Classical-style music became established. Clément Geoffroy, who has been highly active in the French early music scene in recent years and possesses particularly extensive experience as a continuo player for vocal works, has carefully curated a program that spans a wide range of eras—from the second collection of works that launched the career of the master Rameau to the 1768 collection by the virtuoso Dufrêche— carefully curated a program that traces the breadth of musical culture during the reign of Louis XV using just a single harpsichord. Playing superb period-faithful instruments modeled after masterpieces of the era within the acoustic space of the Palace of Versailles, he conveys the charm of each work through a delicate and nuanced performance characterized by an exquisite touch. In addition to famous works such as Rameau’s “The Cyclops” and Royer’s “March of the Scythians,” this album also features many rare works, including a 1732 collection by Dubuisson—rediscovered in 2019 and still shrouded in mystery—and Bernard du Bury’s 1737 collection, for which there are almost no competing recordings.
