The Art of English Catholic Composers on the Continent] Following the development of musical culture under the reign of Elizabeth I in the 16th century, English music in the early 17th century developed its own unique style, influenced by Italian music and other musical influences. This collection features a number of Latin motets by two English composers who defended the Catholic faith, which had been suppressed by the Church of England since the previous century, and who were active in the Spanish Netherlands. Peter Phillips was born around 1560, the same generation as Dowland and Morley, and Dering was about 20 years younger, the same generation as Gibbons and the Italian Frescobaldi. The Cambridge Gonville and Keyes College Choir, well known for its high quality and stable harmonies, has performed the work with a variety of musicians and has given a tasteful interpretation of the charm of the style, which is based on a Renaissance polyphonic style that is not primarily soloistic and incorporates a moderate amount of concerto style. Higginbottom plays the organ, and instrumentalists Bojan Cicich on violin and Richard Boothby on gamba provide rich and inspiring music on the ensemble tracks. Naxos Japan
