Tracing the history of this family—which dominated the 13th through 15th centuries by involving the House of Anjou, the Counts of Foix, the Royal House of Castile, the Royal House of Navarre, the Royal House of Portugal, and even the Royal House of Hungary and the Crusader states—this album traces the history of a dynasty that swept across the 13th to 15th centuries. In doing so, it naturally explores the medieval rondel and villele, the music of the German-speaking Minnesingers, the cantigas of the Iberian courts, and—through the *Ars Nova*—on to early Italian madrigals… This program naturally touches on key milestones in music history, offering a depth that makes one want to revisit it time and again. Featuring multiple bowed string instruments, including the bowed vihuela and viola da gamba, as well as plucked instruments such as early forms of the guitar, harp, and lute, alongside the recorder, shawm, dulcimer, bagpipes—combined with the otherworldly charm of medieval instruments, even pieces that early music fans might be somewhat familiar with, such as works by Guillaume de Machaut and from the Spanish Renaissance, sound remarkably fresh.
