The first (SOMMCD0637) and second (SOMMCD0650) collections of Beethoven's complete symphonies, arranged by Franz Xaver Scharwenka, were highly acclaimed in European music journals. This third collection includes the four-hand version of Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 7. Although composed at a time when he was suffering from ear problems, Tessa Eiss and Ben Sukman perform two of Beethoven's most optimistic works, the brightly conceived No. 2 and the pleasantly rhythmic No. 7, in a duo that is in perfect harmony. Scharwenka, who arranged the music, is a German composer of Polish descent. His brother Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka is also a well-known composer. The brothers studied piano under Czerny's pupil, Theodor Kulak, in Berlin, and their arrangement shows the respect for Beethoven's works that only a direct pupil of Beethoven (Czerny studied directly under Beethoven) can show. The piano duo of Tessa Eiss, a pianist from Cape Town, South Africa, and Penn Skuman, also from South Africa, perform the piece.In 2020, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, the orchestra will record all nine symphonies arranged by Scharwenka, as well as give concerts in London and other cities to great acclaim.
