The Complete Piano Works of Alexei Stanchinsky, performed by Olga Solovieva. This second volume concludes the series. Stanchinsky was born into a wealthy Russian family and studied under Zilyayev and Taneyev at the Moscow Conservatory. Although he was highly regarded as a promising composer, he suffered mental illness following his father’s death and met a mysterious end at the young age of 26. Although he left behind relatively few works during his short life, most of them are for piano. His style is diverse, ranging from pieces that make extensive use of Scriabin-esque chromaticism to works employing unique modes and intricate counterpoint, as well as compositions that reveal the influence of Mussorgsky-style folk music. These works also influenced his contemporaries and friends. This second volume includes all works composed after 1910 and later published by his friends, as well as recently discovered early works. The short pieces from the 1900s are world premiere recordings. The performer, Solovieva, is a Russian pianist who received the “Glinka Medal” in May 2019. In addition to the first volume of the Stanchinsky collection, she has recorded a collection of works by Boris Tchaikovsky (GP716) for the GRANDPIANO label. Naxos Japan
