[An Amazing Baroque Orchestra That Thrived in Italy Before Corelli’s Time!] Concerto Scirocco and Voces Suaves—ensembles comprising up-and-coming musicians who honed their skills at the Basel Schola Cantorum, a world-renowned center for training early music performers and researchers—have, through their recordings for the Italian label ARCANA, Bernardi, and Picchi—and have contributed to the reappraisal of their outstanding achievements. There are very few ensembles specializing in 17th-century music that possess such unity and expertise; like all their previous releases, this album features a range of works—from small-scale pieces that highlight the individual character of each instrument to substantial large-scale works that could only be realized by a team of master string, wind, and keyboard players well-versed in the performance practices of the era. The works of Neri, who was active in Venice in the mid-17th century—a time when the opera composer Cavalli enjoyed great popularity following the death of the master Monteverdi—retain the atmosphere of the “City of Water ,” while their well-structured compositions, exuding refined elegance, foreshadow 18th-century music; The large-scale ensemble pieces, featuring up to 12 parts, display a musical language that connects to the polyphonic choral forms of Villard and Gabrieli as well as the concerto grosso of Corelli and Vivaldi from the late Baroque period, offering endless fascination. Even the smaller-scale works—both vocal and instrumental—feature vivid contrasts that keep the listener captivated, offering more than enough fascination to confirm that Neri’s fame during his lifetime extended throughout the German-speaking world and as far as Sweden. This is an album that invites you to lose yourself in the world of little-known mid-Baroque music while marveling at the virtuosity of Basel’s master musicians. Based on scholarly research, the string instruments and wind instruments are tuned to pitches that differ by nearly a whole tone; this discrepancy is resolved by having the wind instruments transpose their parts.
