This is the fourth collection of chamber music works by Austrian composer and pianist Josef LaBois. Despite the handicap of going blind at the age of three, LaBois made a great career as a music teacher. He was the first teacher of Schoenberg and Alma Mahler, and was a friend of many early 20th century musicians. He taught Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in the war, an important event in his life, and most of his 80 or so compositions in a calm style reminiscent of Brahms were published through the efforts of the wealthy Wittgenstein family. This album features works for clarinet, including two "for left-handed piano" works for Wittgenstein. The clarinet was the instrument played by Paul's brother, Ludwig, who later became a renowned linguist, and these pieces show that he was an excellent player, especially Torsten Johans, who was appointed principal clarinetist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne in 2001 at the young age of 25, The performance is led by Torsten Johans, who became principal clarinetist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne in 2001 at the age of 25.
