Description:
The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of Germany's public broadcasting service, and BR-KLASSIK has come up with a project to commemorate the occasion. It was in 1923 that Germany's public broadcasting service began from a corner of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz. Capre's "The Mirror of Jesus" was composed in the spring and fall of the same year. The oratorio, whose text is a poem by Henri Guéon describing the life of Christ as reflected in the "mirror" of the Virgin Mary, is told by a mezzo-soprano as Mary, who sometimes sings and sometimes tells the story, interchanging atonal moments with the medieval music-like sounds Capre had studied. The sound of the string ensemble and harp, combined with the transparency and buoyancy of the small female chorus, mystically colored the story of the second part, which depicts the suffering and passion of Christ, and beautifully created the sense of ecstasy at the final Assumption. 1923 was the fifth year after the end of World War I, and the scars of war were still everywhere. Capre also served in World War I. Capre also suffered from the aftereffects of injuries sustained during his service in World War I.
