A masterpiece of mono-opera, "The Human Voice," performed by Jansons and Bullock, "The Human Voice" was composed by Poulenc based on Cocteau's screenplay about a woman who receives a phone call late at night from her lover, who has told her he is leaving her, and is driven into a mental corner. This is a remarkable album, with a performance by Veronique Jans, a diva with a special affinity for French opera, and the Orchestre National de Lille, led by Alexandre Bloch, who is highly acclaimed for his work in French modern music, supporting her with a sharp sound that is full of tension. This is the latest recording of this difficult piece, which is not often performed, and it is one that meets many expectations. The coupling piece is "Sinfonietta," which was composed about 10 years before "The Human Voice. This is a lovely work full of French esprit, and you can enjoy Brock's versatile expressive power.
