Mattheson, Johann (1681-1764)

Description:

Johann Matthison, known as a close friend of Handel, was a composer of late German Baroque music who left many vocal works and was also active as a music theorist. He wrote eight operas during his lifetime, one of which is the comedy "Boris Godunov," written in 1710 for the Hamburg Opera and based on the real Russian Tsar Boris Godunov (reigned 1598-1605), as in Mussorgsky's opera. The content, however, is based on Mussorgsky's opera. However, the content is not as serious as Mussorgsky's opera, but rather the story of Russian, Danish, and Swedish aristocrats caught up in the comical intrigues of two tsars. However, the play was abruptly withdrawn by Mattezon himself before its premiere, and it was never performed again during his lifetime. It is speculated that the reason was the deterioration of relations between Hamburg and Russia at the time, but the truth remains a mystery. The complete score of the work was stored in the Hamburg Public Library and lost during World War II, but a manuscript barely made it to the Soviet Union was discovered in Armenia and returned to Hamburg, where it was finally premiered in 2005, some 300 years later. Although Stephen Stubbs later staged a production in Boston, this new production in Innsbruck in 2021 will be the first European stage performance of the work. Andrea Marchior, a well-known harpsichordist, will conduct.Wonderful singers and the ancient music ensemble "Theresia" give a vivid performance. Naxos Japan
