The essence of Bach’s organ art and that of his contemporaries, brought to life by replicas of instruments faithfully modeled after 18th-century German building principles Active along the Baltic Sea coast—where German-language worship and commercial exchanges flourished from the Middle Ages through the early modern period— and who left behind renowned German-style organs in Latvia and Estonia—Heinrich Andreas Contius (1708–1795)—made Halle his base of operations in his youth and was on close terms with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. Later in life, he moved to Leipzig, where he was highly praised even by Johann Sebastian Bach himself—who knew more about organ construction than his own eldest son. In 1779, a new organ built by Kontius was installed at the Holy Trinity Church in Liepāja, the ancient capital of Latvia. After undergoing repeated renovations based on later-era concepts, workshops in the Netherlands and Belgium achieved a restoration faithful to the original in the 21st century. An instrument that meticulously reproduces that model is located at St. Michael’s Church of Peace in Leuven, Belgium; this recording uses that instrument to present a program that traces the musical worlds of composers connected to Bach and Contius. The recording spans works by Bach’s contemporaries, such as Walter and Telemann, through a collection of lesser-known pieces that were once mistaken for Bach’s own, to music from the eve of the Classical period by Bach’s sons and his final pupil, Müthel. The world created by the internationally acclaimed Dutch virtuoso Bart Jacobs—who weaves in arrangements drawn from his rich performance experience—resounds with a fresh vitality through the clear and antique tones produced by the Contius-model instrument.
