Description:
The true value of Beethoven's only oratorio, as unveiled by Herreweghe. It depicts a scene in which Christ, foreseeing his fate, prays on the Mount of Olives, when soldiers appear and Peter and others are captured despite their resistance. Beethoven did not look to the Bible for the text, but asked the opera writer Huber to write the original, and the result is the only oratorio Beethoven wrote during his lifetime. In an interview with the 70-year-old composer, he said, "In my remaining life, I will only perform works that I feel are truly worth facing.The orchestra is led by the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, as in the 2011 recording of "Missa Solemnis," and the central role of Christ is played by Kohlhepp, who has been active in the recording of Bach's great works (John Passion, Mass in B minor) under Jacobs' direction.
