Pioneer of Monteverdi and Marenzio, the depths of Flemish music in Northern Italy were discovered early on from the front lines of the ancient music scene by Italy's cultural greats such as the Este family of Ferrara and the Farnese family of Parma, and in later years he served the Gonzaga family in Mantova and became a colleague of the young Monteverdi Jaques de Werth, an important figure of the late Flemish school of music. Although he was almost the same age as Lassus, who served the Elector of Bavaria in Munich, he was mainly active in northern Italy (he also served Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II for a time), and although he had some affairs with noble ladies and was the subject of some scandals, he made his mark in his time as a musician skilled in improvisation and polyphonic composition. Madrigale was a major contributor to the music of his time. Madrigale was one of his major contributions, and between the elder Cipriano De Lore and his younger colleagues Monteverdi and Marenzio, he inspired many of his peers with his skill in weaving the subtleties of verse into elaborate polyphonic patterns. The sensitivity that he developed through his acquaintance with poets such as Tasso and Guarini led to a new perspective in his later musicalization of the beautiful poems of Petrarch, a 14th century poet.Voces Suaves, a group of talented musicians who studied in Basel, a major center for the study of ancient music, has focused on the substantial works of Jaques de Werth's later years and explored the essence of this composer with flexible compositions that sometimes include recorders, viola da gamba, and string instruments. The passion to reproduce polyphonic music with a straight line is reflected in the surprisingly few albums by this composer on his own, which are filled with fresh and solid interpretations.
