Once again, the program is noteworthy; the selection brilliantly conveys just how vibrant the world of opera was in Vienna during the period when Mozart was active and gradually losing popularity, without being swayed by the composers’ fame. The theme is “Magic.” The album features a carefully curated selection of numbers for baritone from operas centered on sorcery and magic—genres in which philosophical mysteries, akin to Freemasonry, lie beneath the magical performances that delighted the inhabitants of late 18th-century Vienna. From Vranitzky’s *Oberon*, a pioneering work in this genre; to Salieri’s hidden masterpiece *The Cave of Trofonio*, composed at a time when his international fame was skyrocketing; to the Schikaneder troupe’s collaborative work *The Philosopher’s Stone*, which followed the success of Mozart’s *The Magic Flute*; and Winter’s *The Sequel to The Magic Flute*, and Haydn’s often-overlooked yet substantial late opera *The Soul of the Philosopher*—this collection allows listeners to fully savor the artistic beauty of works ranging from short pieces laced with sharp satire to substantial masterpieces.
