Violinist Max Bailey, who has performed with a wide range of musicians including Steve Reich, John Williams, Bobby McFerrin, and Björk; Norwegian hardingfele player Olav Luxengoll Mjølva; and Erik Ludvars, a player of the Swedish folk instrument, the nyckelharpa—make up the Roadster Trio, and this is their debut album. It is a fresh and ambitious work that presents new interpretations by juxtaposing Baroque classics by Bach, Lully, and Couperin with Nordic folk songs and original compositions. Max, intrigued by the performances of Olav and Erik—who had already released several albums—proposed a collaboration. After three days of jam sessions and improvisation, the three hit it off, and the Roadster Trio was born, taking its name from “Roadster,” which means “Polaris.” However, the pandemic struck shortly thereafter, bringing everything to a halt. In August 2021, the trio was finally able to record “Bach to Folk” at Røros Church in Norway. This work, which pushes the boundaries of the mysterious and magical Nordic string instruments, not only showcases the three musicians’ exceptional artistry but also captivates not only fans of Bach, Baroque music, and Nordic folk songs but also anyone who loves the beautiful sound of string instruments.
