Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Joachim Raff’s Birth. The warm, refined sound of a cappella performed by a choir from his homeland Swiss composer Joachim Raff celebrated the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2022. He honed his orchestration skills as an assistant to Franz Liszt in his youth and is regarded as one of Switzerland’s leading symphonists, having composed more than 10 symphonies. Raff, who was also an accomplished pianist, left behind a large body of work, including piano pieces. These works have gained a strong and enduring following in Japan thanks to their expansive beauty—evocative of the Swiss landscape—and their warm sound, rooted in the Romantic tradition. The unaccompanied choral works included on this album were all composed by Raff from the late 1930s through his 1940s; as a late bloomer, these are magnificent works crafted with the mature artistry he had developed by the time he gained recognition for his Symphony No. 1. While his style is rooted in the Romantic tradition, it also incorporates elements of Renaissance polyphony. The performance is by the Swiss vocal ensemble Basel Madrigalisten, under the artistic direction of conductor Raphael Immose, a scholar of rare works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Naxos Japan
