Description:
Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski. Discovered by Abbado and Ashkenazy, he signed an exclusive contract with Decca at the age of 17, which led to a steady stream of recordings. In recent years, he has focused his recordings on “what he truly finds beautiful” and has released them on the ONDINE label. His fourth recording for the label features Chopin’s mazurkas—works that Jablonski, whose father is Polish, describes as his “most beloved” and which he has been performing since the early days of his career. This is the long-awaited first volume of his complete mazurka recordings. Chopin composed these mazurkas—based on folk dances from his native Poland—at various times from around the age of 20 until the very end of his life. Although he organized them into coherent groups of several pieces by opus number and provided clear instructions in the scores, he is said to have told his students to “trust their own intuition” when performing them; consequently, their interpretation requires precise tempo rubato, dynamics, and pedaling. Yablonski expresses his deep empathy for Chopin through his exceptional technique, cultivated over many years of performance experience. He contributed his own commentary to the booklet (co-authored, in English) and concludes it by quoting the following words from Szymanowski: “Chopin is an immortal figure who demonstrated the potential of Polish music. He represents Poland within Europe, standing at the pinnacle of European culture without losing a single trait of his homeland.” Naxos Japan
