Description:

The second recording by Nicolas Colon and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra features works by Thomas Adès “Thomas Adès is a great artist of both the last century and this one, and for me, he is one of the composers I most want to conduct”—Nicolas Colon Nicolas Colon is the first Chief Conductor in the history of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (FRSO) to be appointed from outside Finland. Following his debut recording, *Sibelius: Symphony No. 7 and Others* (NYCX-10305 [Domestic Edition] / ODE-1404 [Import Edition]), his second release features Thomas Adès! During Colón’s inaugural season, Adès was the centerpiece of the “3rd Finnish Radio Music Festival” in the fall of 2021. Of particular note was the world premiere of the orchestral version of “Marchentanze: Fairy Tale Dances,” performed by Pekka Kuusisto. The piece was commissioned jointly by the Louis Vuitton Foundation and the Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation and written for violin and piano. It was originally scheduled to premiere at Tokyo Opera City’s Composium 2020 with Adès himself on piano and Leila Jossevitz, but the visit to Japan was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it was premiered in Paris in October 2021 by Adès and Pekka Kousist. The recording features the orchestral version commissioned by Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle). Structured in four movements and based on English folk songs, the third movement—which depicts a lark in flight—is reminiscent of Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending.” The “Hotel Suite” is Adès’s breakthrough work, composed at the age of 24; it is an orchestral suite based on material from the opera *Powder Her Face*. The opera is based on a real-life scandal involving the aristocracy, and one can sense the influence of Alban Berg, Britten, Weill, and Piazzolla. Ades has composed three orchestral suites based on this music, and this work is the most recent. “A Place Found” is effectively a cello concerto written for Steven Isserlis. It proceeds through a first movement depicting water, a second movement depicting mountains (and mountaineers), and a meditative third movement, before closing with a virtuosic finale that quotes Offenbach’s can-can. “Dawn” was commissioned for the 2020 BBC Proms. Its subtitle, “Chaconne for Orchestra at Any Distance,” reflects the fact that it was written “to be performed in any configuration,” in response to discussions about social distancing among musicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was premiered in August 2020 by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Simon Rattle. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese translation of the liner notes from the original release.
