85th Anniversary of Silvestrov’s Birth. A CD featuring performances by a choir from Munich, Kyiv’s sister city Silvestrov was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. As a member of the “Kyiv Avant-Garde,” he composed avant-garde works that were sometimes banned from performance during the Soviet era; however, in the 1970s, he shifted to music with a sense of tonality and a gentle, contemplative character, and in recent years, his popularity has been steadily growing. Sylvesterov regards the avant-garde music he once pursued as the endpoint of music history, and characterizes his recent works as “music that resounds after music history has come to an end.” This “Requiem” is a work that Silvestrov spent three years completing after the 1996 passing of his wife, Larisa Bondarenko, who was both a musicologist and a literary scholar. It consists of seven movements; while the lyrics consist of fragments of the Latin Requiem, the central movement quotes the poem “Dream” by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s national poet. A distinctive feature of this Requiem, written in memory of his beloved wife, is the absence of a scene depicting God’s judgment—a scene that many composers have portrayed dramatically with intense music. Interwoven at times with sweet reminiscences, the music of sorrow and mourning—which gently ebbs and flows over the course of just over 60 minutes—seems to comfort the hearts of those left behind while praying for the peace of the departed soul. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Silvestrov, who was in Kyiv at the time, evacuated thanks to the efforts of acquaintances and moved to Germany in early March. This recording is being released from Munich—Kyiv’s sister city—to commemorate Silvestrov’s 85th birthday. Conductor Andres Mustonen was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and performs a wide range of music, from medieval and Middle Eastern music to Baroque, Classical, and contemporary works. He is particularly dedicated to the works of Tour, Pärt, Gubaidulina, and Penderecki. Here, he draws a delicate and intricate sound from the choir and orchestra, weaving the piece together.
